Before the Sun Salutation, there was Surya Kriya...
Traditionally available only to select groups of yogis, Surya Kriya is being offered through Sadhguru's willingness to bring back this powerful practice as a comprehensive spiritual practice that is ideal for the hectic pace of today’s world.
Up until now, Surya Namaskar was offered publicly offered. When those who knew the practice saw a need to to help the masses, they could not offer Surya Kriya in its most potent form so they taught Surya Namaskar (sun salutation) which has less potency spiritually but can still offer the benefits of balancing the system.
“Surya” means “sun,” and “kriya” means “inner energy process.” Surya Kriya activates the solar plexus to raise the samat prana, or solar heat, in the system. It also balances a person’s left and right energy channels, leading to stability of the body and stillness of the mind.
